Remembered for its powerful imagery and its repetition of a simple and memorable phrase, King’s “I Have a Dream” speech has endured as a signature moment of the civil rights struggle, and a crowning achievement of one of the movement’s most famous faces. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. [applause] We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro’s basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. In March 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. marched with 25,000 people from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, to fight for African American voting rights.

Just one day before he was assassinated, King gave his final speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop."

On Monday, Americans nationwide will remember the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and, for some, that includes remembering the civil rights leader's most famous speech, "I Have a Dream.". Here’s how. About halfway through the speech, singer Mahalia Jackson urged King to tell the audience "about the dream," referencing his Detroit speech, according to the Constitution Center.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. And we must know on some positions, cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?'

Around the time he wrote his famed “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” King decided to move forward with the idea for another event that coordinated with Negro American Labor Council (NACL) founder A. Philip Randolph’s plans for a job rights march.

Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered this iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

", He ended the speech with: "I'm happy tonight. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. Like what you see here? The following year, after the violent Selma to Montgomery march in Alabama, African Americans secured another victory with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Although his “I have a dream” segment did not appear in his written text, it had been used to great effect before, most recently during a June 1963 speech to 150,000 supporters in Detroit.

(Yes) Free at last! (Yes) We can never be satisfied [applause] as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.

This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. How long? He began his speech slowly but soon showed his gift for weaving recognizable references to the Bible, the U.S. Constitution and other universal themes into his oratory. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." (My Lord) Again and again (No, no), we must rise to the majestic heights (Yes) of meeting physical force with soul force. We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality.

(My Lord, Yeah) One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.

We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. The March on Washington produced a bigger turnout than expected, as an estimated 250,000 people arrived to participate in what was then the largest gathering for an event in the history of the nation’s capital.

And so we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. In 1964, King was 35 years old and the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. For your voice to be heard, in most states you must register before you can vote. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. Other influential leaders also came aboard, including Walter Reuther of the United Auto Workers (UAW) and Joachim Prinz of the American Jewish Congress (AJC).

But not only that: Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia. But King turns the entire term on its head, saying he is happy to be maladjusted if it means adapting to racism and a society built against him and his people.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

James Reston of The New York Times wrote that the “pilgrimage was merely a great spectacle” until King’s turn, and James Baldwin later described the impact of King’s words as making it seem that “we stood on a height, and could see our inheritance; perhaps we could make the kingdom real.”. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead.

Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last! Free at last! It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. We cannot be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.

1963 is not an end, but a beginning.

On August 28, 1955, while visiting family in Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Emmett Till was brutally beaten and lynched, just days after he allegedly whistled at a white woman in a local store. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. My dear and abiding friends, Ralph Abernathy, and to all of the distinguished Americans seated here on the rostrum, my friends and co-workers of the state of Alabama, and to all of the freedom-loving people who have assembled here this afternoon from all over our nation and from all over the world: Last Sunday, more than eight thousand of us started on a mighty walk from Selma, Alabama. Not long, you shall reap what you sow. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exhalted [sic], every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.

Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California.
